PSY reveals he almost didn’t upload ‘Gangnam Style’ on YouTube

Singer and entertainer PSY appeared on South Korean show Hidden Singer, where he revealed that he was close to not uploading the globally popular “Gangnam Style” music video on YouTube.

“‘Gangnam Style’ is a song that’s like an award or trophy in my life,” the singer said during the show’s July 1st broadcast, as reported by Soompi. “To be honest, I didn’t even know what YouTube was. When an employee suggested uploading the ‘Gangnam Style’ video on YouTube, I said, ‘I don’t even have international fans, so why would we upload it?’”

PSY concluded, “We did end up uploading it because they said it might be fun if we upload it, and then all of those things happened within a month.”

“If you could choose a moment when you felt the huge popularity, when would it be?” asked MC Jun Hyun Moo, to which PSY answered, “I once filmed in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and so many people gathered when it was during the day. I was really surprised then.”

Korean songwriter Kim Hyung Suk also mentioned that “Gangnam Style” had an impact beyond just PSY’s popularity, saying, “It used to be difficult to work with foreign musicians, but after PSY, I received a lot of calls from overseas.”

“Gangnam Style” was the most watched video on YouTube between Nov. 24, 2012, and July 10, 2017. It became the first YouTube video to reach 1 billion views in December 2012.

At the time of writing, the video has been viewed more than 3.1 billion times.
