Transport Minister Predicts Homecoming Flow to Peak on June 8-9

The Minister of Transportation predicts that the peak season of the Eid al-Fitr` homecoming season will shift from June 13-14 to June 8-9.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that the shift was based on the poll result of the 2018 Eid al-Fitr`s mass-exodus. “We held a poll on Eid al-Fitr transportation before and after the collective leave was officially announced. There were some changes once it was announced, where several people chose to travel on June 8-9,” said Budi Karya in a press release on Monday, June 4.

Prior to the revised Eid al-Fitr collective leave announcement, the transportation ministry initially predicted that the peak season will take place on June 23-24.

Based on last year’s Eid al-Fitr transportation, the transportation minister announced that in general, there were a 2.44 percent increase of travelers using public transportation, 28.74 percent using personal vehicles, and 33.53 percent of motorcyclists. Meanwhile, the number of road accidents during the homecoming season throughout 2017 was managed to be reduced by 30 percent which also helped reduce the number of traffic fatalities by 41 percent. Furthermore, the Transportation Minister urged people to not use motorcycles as a means of transportation for this year’s Eid al-Fitr homecoming period, despite the number of accidents was reduced last year.
