Ex-Komnas HAM Chairman Abdul Hakim Garuda Nusantara dies at 64

The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has stated that its former chairman, Abdul Hakim Garuda Nusantara, died at the age of 64 on Friday.

“He passed away last night or early this morning,” Komnas HAM commissioner Amirudin Al-Rahab said as quoted by tempo.co.

No information was provided as to the cause of his death.

Abdul will be buried at Kober Cemetery in Kemang Pratama, Bekasi, West Java, at 1 p.m on Friday.

Several public figures, such as Crescent Star Party chairman Yusril Ihza Mahendra and Legal Aid Institute for Indonesian Community Advocacy (LBH AMIN) founder Juventy M. Siahaan, have posted their condolences on Twitter.

“Our colleague, Dr. Abdul Hakim Garuda Nusantara, has passed away today. May Allah accept all his good deeds and forgive his mistakes,” Yusril posted on his personal Twitter account, @Yusrilihza_Mhd.

“I am sorry to hear about the death of senior advocate and former Komnas HAM chairman Abdul Hakim Garuda Nusantara. May he rest in peace,” Juventy tweeted (@advokatprubahan).

Born on Dec. 12, 1954 in Pekalongan, Central Java, Abdul devoted most of his life to defending human rights. He started his career volunteering at the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute during his fourth year at university, later becoming the head of the institute. Abdul went on to found the Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy (ELSAM) in 1993.
