Life Sentence Better than Death Row for Aman Abdurrahman: Expert

A terrorism expert at the University of Indonesia Ridwan Habib said that the best punishment for terrorist suspect Aman Abdurrahman is not the death penalty but the life sentence, instead.

“I think that Aman needs to be isolated. It might possibly not be in Nusakambangan, but in another undisclosed location. And only immediate family members can visit him,” said Ridwan on Thursday, June 21.

Aman Abdurrahman is the leader of terrorist group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) which is also affiliated to ISIS. The group has been behind several terror acts in Indonesia, such as the infamous Thamrin bombing.

The South Jakarta District Court will be announcing Aman’s verdict today on Friday, June 22. Aman had previously been handed a death sentence after the public prosecutors saw him guilty of conducting a string of terror acts. He is also considered to be a recidivist and a danger for society.

According to Ridwan, the death sentence for Aman Abdurrahman will just spark retaliations from JAD followers that still exist out there. Other than that, he further argues that a death sentence is considered to be ineffective in deterring terrorists, since that is one of their end goals all along.

Ridwan reminded the fact that Aman Abdurrahman once convinced Abu Bakar Ba’asyir to support ISIS and to also be its recruiter during his time at Nusakambangan.
