Edwin Serves Up The Foodie Drama ‘The Birdwoman’s Palate’

After an unexpected success at the box office last year with teenage drama “Posesif,” the award-winning auteur Edwin, better known for his avant-garde festival film (“Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly,” “Postcards From the Zoo” ), returning to the silver screen with other mainstream drama, the adaptation of “food novel” Laksmia Pamuntjak “Arunn and his Tongue” (“Aruna and Palate”). The film version, whose English title is “The Birdwoman’s Palate,” is scheduled to reach Indonesian cinema in late September.

“This is a drama with a lot of seasoning,” Edwin said about the film during a media meeting in South Jakarta on Thursday (31/05).

Laksmi’s bestselling novel, according to a description on the author’s website, combines “insights into Indonesian food, local history, religion, and politics.”

The author is also famous for writing the legendary Jakarta Food Guide, first published in 2001 and now in its fifth iteration.

Like the book, the adaptation of the film centered around the figure of Aruna (Dian Sastrowardoyo), a single woman in her mid 30s and an epidemiologist who specializes in Avian Flu, but her main passion is food.

Aruna embarked on a journey across the archipelago to examine deadly diseases that brought along his best friends Nadezhda (Hannah Al-Rashid), Bono (Nicholas Saputra) and Farish (Oka Antara). Along the way, they also end up doing research into the culinary treasures of Indonesia.

“It’s more than a movie about food,” said Edwin. “It’s also about the complex relationships of the characters in this country.”

He said local audiences would easily relate to many scenes in the film.

“We all enjoy chatting while eating delicious and entertaining food. This is what we do.English brings us closer and this film will reflect that tradition,” said Edwin.

Aruna and his tongue will be the second collaboration between Edwin and producer Meiske Taurisia for Palari Films, after their Possessive debut last year.

However, the duo have long worked together and have produced several films together, including “Blind Pig Who Wants To Fly”), “Zoo” (“Postcards From the Zoo”), “Hulahoop”, “The Wife of Someone on the Boat Someone “and” Journey to Wounds. ”

The script was written by Titien Wattimena (“Mengejar Matahari”), Zoo, “Rain in June” (“Rain in June” – also a novel adaptation).

Before he started working on Aruna and his tongue, Edwin had planned to make another novel adaptation, “Like Rind, Rancid Must Be Rewarded” (“Love and Revenge”), based on Eka Kurniawan’s novel of the same title, but who has now been postponed.

“I still need to make adjustments to the film and hope to finish it soon, while I hope people will enjoy Aruna,” said Edwin.

Although Aruna will feature familiar faces of Nicholas Saputra and Dian Sastrowardoyo, renowned for playing the loves of Rangga and Cinta in the 2002 classic “What’s Up With Love?” Or the AADC and the 2016 sequel, this time not there will be a romance between them.

Nicholas will play Bono, a charming cook and friend Aruna who shares his obsession with food.

“AADC 1 and 2, and 3 Prayer 3 Love [Pesantren: 3 Wishes, 3 Loves],” said Dian.

Both Dian and Nicholas say they have no problem adjusting to their new character.

Dian, who runs a restaurant called MAM by 3 Skinny Minnies, says her business helps her to understand and appreciate food.

“I have a good relationship with food.” I like to try new dishes. “I like to try new dishes.” My love of food helps me understand my character in film, “Dian said.

Nicholas echoed Dian’s desire for food. The award-winning actor, also known as a traveling man and an amateur chef who is passionate, said he hopes to share his passion for both in the film.
