Football Parts of Character Education: Minister

Football is part of character education for students of Junior High Schools (SMP) in Indonesia, Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy remarked here on Thursday.

“Through Gala Students Indonesia (GSI), we are not only looking for superior soccer seeds but also instilling character education to Junior High School students to learn sportsmanship and honesty, “Muhadjir said.

According to the minister, GSI is a manifestation of Nawacita program of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla in applying character education through football that is tiered through the sub-district, district / city, provincial, national, and international levels.

GSI is followed by 10,761 students with a total number of students per team of 18 people. The GSI match has been taking place at the district / city and provincial levels until May 14 and will begin again in some areas by June 30.

The number of district-level GSI matches is 4,151 with details of the sub-district level of 3,718 matches and the district level of 433 matches.

The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemdikbud) also cooperates with the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) and the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) in the implementation of GSI.

The partnership began in 2017, with a licensed soccer coaching program for 90 sports teachers aged under 45.

In addition, Kemdikbud also cooperates with the German government through Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (ZIS) in soccer activities for character building in Indonesia, which is a training program for sports teachers.

The cooperation aims to increase the capacity and competence of students through football to support the character education.
