Terrorism Bill Ratified, TNI Listed in Presidential Regulation

The government will soon formulate a presidential regulation (Perpres) that explains the involvement of the National Armed Forces (TNI) in the fight against terrorism. The Presidential Regulation is a follow up of the Terrorism draft bill, which will be brought to the plenary session today, Friday, May 25.

“The law can already be used by law enforcers. We will arrange a Perpres on TNI involvement,” said Minister of Justice and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna Laoly after a working meeting on the revision of Law No. 15 of 2003 on Terrorism Crime in the House of Representatives, South Jakarta, Thursday, May 25.

The formulation of the Perpres will involve various stakeholders, such as the Ministry of Defense, TNI, Police, and the National Agency for Counter-Terrorism (BNPT).

The Government and Parliament have approved the definition of terrorism to be included in the Terrorism draft bill. Both agree on the second definition of terrorism that contains elements of political motives, ideologies, and security disturbances.

Chairman of the Special Committee on Terrorism law, Muhammad Syafi’i, said that with the agreement between the government and the House of Representatives, the terrorism draft bill will soon be brought to the second level discussion in plenary tomorrow. The bill will be ratified into law.
