Shawn Mendes’s New Album Artwork Is Reminding Fans of a Photo App Filter

Shawn Mendes has officially announced his third album, a self-titled record called Shawn Mendes: The Album that will feature collaborations with the likes of Khalid and Julia Michaels. But the album is already stirring up discussion among Shawn’s fans, with a potential controversy emerging around the album artwork.
The musician released the album cover on Wednesday, just a few weeks after releasing his new single “In My Blood.” The image is of Shawn’s face, collaged with bright flowers that appear to be blooming out of his skin. But while many fans are obviously excited for the album’s release on May 25, others have pointed out possible issues with the artwork credit and inspiration.

Although Shawn credited @jayy_babyxo97 for the inspiration behind the art,” some fans have noted that the image looks similar to a filter that can be used on a picture editing app called Photo Lab. One person even showed the filter, called Inner Bloom, in action on a number of images

Fans have taken to Twitter to ask Shawn if he noticed the commonalities, with one person tweeting: “no offense but does shawn know that the workart was actually made by an app called photolab?” One follower also expressed concern, writing: “I mean Shawn Mendes should give credz to photolab app too.”

Meanwhile, others have pointed out that this type of fan artwork has been created in the past; Photo Lab was probably not the first to do it. One follower even pointed out an artist named Marcelo Monreal who has created similar collage-based artwork. Meanwhile, users are defending the original fan Shawn credited for inspiration, noting that the person is not “deserving of hate.”
