Cricket Australia Says New Coach Will be Appointed Before Six-Match ODI Series Against England in June
Australia’s new coach, one-day international captain and ODI vice-captain will be appointed before the team embarks on a tour of the United Kingdom in June.
Cricket Australia held a board meeting on Friday to discuss filling the positions, which became vacant in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town last month.
Test and ODI captain Steve Smith and Test vice-captain David Warner received 12-month bans from cricket for their roles in the scandal, while coach Darren Lehmann resigned at the completion of the four-Test series against the Proteas.
Wicketkeeper Tim Paine was subsequently appointed as Smith’s replacement as Test captain.
“The Board has asked management to provide recommendations regarding candidates for the Men’s Head Coach, ODI Captain and ODI Vice-Captain,” Cricket Australia Chairman David Peever said in a statement.
“The Board is anticipating receiving these recommendations in the coming weeks, with a view to making appointments ahead of the ODI Tour to the UK. Once these appointments have been endorsed and finalised, announcements can then be made.”
Justin Langer is the favourite ahead of Jason Gillespie and Ricky Ponting to be appointed Australian head coach, while Paine and limited-overs opener Aaron Finch are the two logical options to battle it out to get the nod as ODI captain.
Australia will tour the United Kingdom for a six-match ODI series from June 13-27.
