Govt Sets Emergency Response Period on Banjarnegara Quake

Banjarnegara Regency Administration has set the emergency response period to seven days following the magnitude 4.4 earthquake in the region.

“We have set the period of emergency,” said Banjarnegara Mayor Budhi Sarwono, Wednesday, April 18.

Banjarnegara was struck by a shallow earthquake at 13:28 local times. Hundreds of houses in Kalibening District were destroyed and as many as 2,000 people were evacuated. In addition, two persons were reportedly dead.

According to Budhi, the emergency response period will be expanded so long the emergency measures are required. “We will evaluate the condition, if it’s needed, we will make it for 14 days,” he said.

Furthermore, Budhi claimed the emergency response towards the incident has been well conducted, supported by the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police, Red Cross Indonesia, and other related parties. In addition, Kalibening community health center (Puskesmas) is opened for 24 hours to treat the evacuees.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the center of the Banjarnegara earthquake was at the depth of four kilometers and 52 kilometers north of Kebumen, Central Java.
