Commonwealth Games: Eilidh Doyle Wins 400m Hurdles Silver on Gold Coast

Scotland’s Eilidh Doyle secured 400m hurdles silver for the third successive Commonwealth Games as Jamaica’s Janieve Russell took gold.

The 31-year-old, who carried her nation’s flag at the opening ceremony, finished 0.47 seconds adrift of Russell in 54.80 seconds.

Doyle also finished second at Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014.

Meanwhile, England’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson led the heptathlon after the first two events.

The 25-year-old is the favourite for gold and had 2,111 points, 27 clear of second-placed Canadian Nina Schultz.

Johnson-Thompson, who won the World Indoor pentathlon title last month, was fifth after the opening 100m hurdles but moved top with a joint-first finish in the high jump.

The competition continues with the shot put and 200m on Thursday and long jump, javelin and 800m on Friday.

England’s Niamh Emerson was fifth and Scotland’s Holly McArthur and Katherine O’Connor tied for ninth.

Johnson-Thompson finished fourth in her 100m hurdles heat in a time of 13.54 seconds.

She reached a height of 1.87m in the high jump, which was enough to move into the lead, despite being 0.11m below her personal best.
