Asian Games 2018: German Contractor Runs Velodrome Construction

The construction of cycle track for the Asian Games 2018 in Velodrom Rawamangun, East Jakarta is still underway. To meet the international standard set by Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the team from Germany was assigned to install the woods for the indoor track.

Velodrom Rawamangun Project Director Iwan Takwin stated the team consisted of 18 cycling track specialists, VeloTrack.

“They are the specialized contractor for the race track. The team used to build many top tracks around the world. One of them named Ralph Schurmann who was a recommended contractor by UCI to design this track,” said Iwan when met at the location, Tuesday, April 3.

Iwan said his team did not want to carelessly build the velodrome. Unfortunately, until now no contractor from Indonesia able to build a detailed cycle track based on the UCI standard and specification. Not only the high standardization of the construction, VeloTrack team has a particular model for each track such as the wood density up to its sloped surface.

“Indonesia didn’t have such contractor. Even UCI only recommended two persons from all over the world,” said Iwan.

The wood used for Velodrom Rawamangun was from Siberia, based on UCI specification. Since the last two weeks, the woods have been imported from Germany. VeloTrack team has started the project from the wood loading until the last track installment.

“To get the certification, UCI team will check the homologation including the horses, structures, the plank distances. If it didn’t meet the standard, they would reject it so that we asked for VeloTrack,” said Iwan.

The construction of cycle race track Asian Games 2018 is expected to finish at this April’s end, while the completed project of the velodrome is targeted at the beginning of May. Iwan mentioned the total fund for the project was at Rp665 billion.
